I used to love this site - some of the most enjoyable and well-researched automotive articles anywhere, but Aaron Severson hasn’t posted a new article since October 2017, and hasn’t posted a car model history since March 2017, since then, its just been privacy/terms of use/comment policy notices and updates.

Well, after more than 2 years, we finally have closure of a sort regarding what happened. It appears that he lost his entire research library due to what seems to be a household mold problem, and, more importantly, seems to have determined that new Californian laws apparently make websites like his illegal or too difficult to maintain legally?
Honestly, considering how much time and effort each of those articles takes, and how long he’s been doing it, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he just wanted to take a break, but this is an un expected development.

“The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 was approved by the California State Governor on June 28, 2018, and goes into effect on January 1, 2020. The law applies to any business that has more than $25 million in revenue, or buys or sells the personal information of 50,000 or more consumers, or derives 50 percent or more of its annual revenue from selling consumers’ personal information, and that does any amount of business in the State of California. “

I think he’s afraid that the law could be interpreted more broadly, if tested. Also, there’s something about a ban on freelance journalism, which he feels applies to what he does online.

That’s a bummer of an update. I used to read his stuff pretty religiously.

I think it something along the lines of something that California enacted to prevent Uber just considering everyone contractors when they're not technically contractors ends up applying in some cases to freelance journalists?

Hadn’t thought of it that way, but yeah, the whole independent contractor vs. employee thing being an underlying issue makes sense.

It’s AB5, and a lot of freelancers are truly pissed off about it. It was aimed at gig economy businesses to keep them from their usual exploitative practices, but it was too broad and most interpretations of the law are that it limits California freelancers to 35 articles per year—total—if they want to stay freelance: https://laist.com/2019/12/31/ab5_california_gig_economy_workers_uber_lyft_freelance_writers_musicians_dynamex_lorena_gonzalez.php
Instead of hiring those freelancers
on full-time as AB5's lanugage wants, a lot of companies are just dropping CA freelancers instead. It sucks.
